Loblolly Press is an independent publisher based in Asheville, North Carolina.

We publish contemporary poetry and prose rooted in the American South, with an editorial focus shaped by place, lived experience, and long-term care for the work. Our catalog reflects how people live here now, not how the region is often remembered or marketed.

We publish with intention. We’re small by choice and committed to depth over speed.

You won’t get daily hot takes or algorithm-led headlines. You’ll get writing that speaks to the work of books and the people who make them, including:

  • Author interviews from Loblolly Press: In Conversation (audio and transcripts)

  • Editor’s reflections on acquisitions, craft, and editorial practice

  • Behind-the-scenes looks at design, production, and bookmaking

  • Reading recommendations and seasonal dispatches from the press

This is for readers who care about the how behind a book—not just the final result. It’s for writers looking for models of alternative publishing. It’s for anyone who has ever felt out of place in the South, but still called it home.

Loblolly Press was founded to make room for work that often struggles to find a sustained home in traditional publishing.

We publish writers whose voices are shaped by the South and attentive to the pressures of living here now. Our goal is not to define Southern literature, but to expand its possibilities through careful editorial practice and long-term partnership with our authors.

This newsletter is a window into that work.

About the Editor

I’m Andrew Mack, Founder and Managing Editor of Loblolly Press. I oversee editorial direction, acquisitions, and author partnerships across the catalog. My work at the press is grounded in a commitment to sustained editorial care, transparency, and building space for writers whose work is often sidelined elsewhere.

I’m a poet and the author of Weekend Revival, What the River Was, and Beasts of Chase. I live in Asheville, North Carolina.

Our Mission

We publish Southern voices that often lack sustained visibility. We work with writers whose work expands Southern literature’s possibilities and reflects the region’s complexity today.
